“Only Unity: Serbia In The Aftermath of Yugoslavia” Exhibition
Opening Event: 19h, November 22 at Artget Gallery, Belgrade
“Only Unity: Serbia In The Aftermath of Yugoslavia” is Matt Lutton’s personal response to the confounding atmosphere of the region. This project presents a psychological portrait of Serbs and their neighbours from across the Balkans as they confront a radically changed landscape within physically contracting borders.
Matt Lutton: “I arrived in Belgrade in March 2007 as a student, and I immediately began exploring the region by bus and train, looking out at confusing scenes I hoped one day to understand. Two years later, in pursuit of that understanding, I moved here. I have been working as a photographer and living in Belgrade ever since. This exhibition is the result of nearly seven years of research, exploration and experience. This is my journey: I am sharing what I’ve seen and what I’ve learned. My account should not stand in a vacuum. What I’ve seen and what I have to say should be part of a conversation. I began as an observer, a traveler, and over time I have grown closer to this story and the people who live here, and I now feel I’m a participant.”
